Fr Mubangizi John Bosco, Currently Serving as the Parish Priest of St Anne’s, Belgravia, Johannesburg, RSA, Tells Us About His Missionary Vocation

FR JOHN Bosco was born in Kakore, Kabale District, in Western Uganda. After primary school at Rwempungu Primary, he joined Kigarama Senior Secondary School and, in 1994, sat for the Uganda Certificate Examination (UCE). This opened the door to the Advanced Level, for which he attended St Michael’s High School Rugazi in Bushenyi. After his A-Levels, he joined Makerere University Business School in Kampala. Three years later, he obtained a diploma in Sales and Marketing Management.
He soon found a job with Radiant Health Club, as a manager. A couple of years later, he accepted the position of manager of Namirembe Pharmacy Ltd. In short, he was headed down a road that would unlock many opportunities for him. But what does this have to do with the story of his missionary vocation?
Fr John Bosco shares: “The idea of becoming a priest had not been absent in me. In the beginning, I applied to the minor seminary in Mbarara Archdiocese. The answer was positive, but soon I had to leave the institution for lack of school fees. Years later, I applied to join the major seminary. Once again, the answer was positive. But then I was admitted to a prestigious school on a government sponsorship. My parish priest told me: ‘Go to university and get a degree: If your vocation is true, it will not die. In fact, you will find it has reached greater maturity and has become clearer at the end of your studies.’
When I was at Makerere University Business School, I came to know the Comboni Missionaries. I met the vocations promoter of his institute in Uganda. The desire to serve God was still present in me. The frequent meetings with the Comboni Missionary ended up colouring that desire with a precise nuance, which today I can define as ‘missionary’.
