YOUTH AND JUBILEE

The front cover portrays faces of various youth leaders from the parish of Regina Mundi in Soweto. This parish played a significant role during the 1976 uprisings, protecting those who took refuge in its shelter. Nearly 50 years later, these young men and women represent the hope for a better South Africa, where youth can exercise a meaningful role in society and in the Church, where their talents can be recognized and their voices heard. May their dreams for a bright future and a fruitful discipleship of Jesus be fulfilled.

MISSION IS FUN

FLEEING FROM FRIENDS

FR DANIEL (not his real name) was quite new to the parish of Waterval and was still learning to navigate the roads that connected the communities at that time. He was also introduced to the possible dangers existing in some areas of the parish and advised to be careful in all his movements.

One Sunday, on his return to the mission, Fr Daniel noticed that a car was following him, so he accelerated the speed of his car, racing like a bullet on the unpaved road towards Ximhungwe. The car behind him increased its speed too, but was struggling to catch up with him.

Fr Daniel managed to dodge the persecutors and to reach the village of Cunningmore, where he could call and meet one of his confreres.

Hours later, Fr Daniel received a phone call from one of his friends, a parishioner, who asked him: “Why were you tearing down the road, trying to escape from us this morning? We just wanted to greet you.” After that, Fr Daniel taught himself how to recognize his parishioners’ vehicles from afar.
