WORK AND HUMAN DIGNITY

A young farmer holding a hoe in a field of cassava plants. In Africa, cassava is the second most important staple food after maize, providing the primary energy source for approximately 40% of the population. Due to high levels of unemployment, small- scale farming provides a dignified way of self-sustenance.

Who Killed the Chicken?

BROTHER JOSEPH and Father Mathebula, not their real names, were very fond of their respective dogs at Maria Trost.

Jambo, a male Rottweiler, was given to Br Joseph as a puppy by a magistrate who was leaving the town. Vuya, on the other hand, was a female Labrador found in the streets of Lydenburg by an old lady whose passion was rescuing stray dogs and finding homes for them. Fr Mathebula welcomed the young Labrador to Maria Trost.

Months passed, and the dogs’ interest in chasing Brother Joseph’s chickens was awakened and as their appetite for meat grew, the first casualty occurred.

Hearing the commotion made by the rest of the hens, Br Joseph and Fr Mathebula ran to the crime scene, where the two dogs were found standing next to each other, making it impossible to identify the culprit.

The two missionaries kept arguing over whose dog was to be blamed for such an atrocity, each one defending the innocence of his own pet.

They never succeeded in agreeing on the chicken killer and the mystery will have to remain unveiled, probably until the next life!
